Don't Let Clients Get Away With This Bad Practice in Their Resumes
As resume writers, we do more than write. For example, we advise clients on best practices that increase their odds for a streamlined and expeditious job search.
Part of how we achieve this is by advising clients NOT TO use their current employer's email address in their resumes, LinkedIn profiles, or any other part of their job search. Using an employer-provided email address when seeking new employment is unprofessional and, therefore, should be avoided.
Possible Issue With Current Employer
Employers leverage AI now more than ever - and you can bet they are on the hunt for employees looking to "jump ship." That's why allowing any of your client to use their company email is a super bad idea. Doing so could signal to a current employer an active job search, which can give employers cause for termination.
Possible Issue With Future Employers
Beyond possible issues with a current employer, imagine what potential new employers could think:
"If this person is using their company email now when reaching out to me for employment, what are the chances he/she would do the same bad practice later when on our payroll?"
Straight Talk With Your Client
When the time calls for it, have that tough conversation with your clients. For those clients who don't have a personal, professional email address, point them to free email service providers, such as Gmail and Outlook. Within minutes, a new email address can be obtained.
