We Help Resume Writers Build Successful & Profitable Resume Writing Businesses

We Love Helping Resume Writers Whether They're Researching, Launching or Scaling Their Businesses

Module 9 – LinkedIn in Review

LinkedIn has proven to be a valuable resource for LinkedIn profile and resume writers. The biggest challenge has been figuring out what works best so we’re not wasting your marketing time and budget.

Despite what our clients believe, LinkedIn isn’t just an online resume. It’s a networking and communication tool. It’s a job board. It can initiate joint venture partnerships, find vendors/suppliers, and group people together based on common interests.

For LinkedIn profile writers, LinkedIn’s features benefit our businesses by enabling us to:

  • Publish content
  • Build brand awareness
  • Leverage messaging
  • Network & connect

For our clients, LinkedIn is where HRMs and recruiters congregate.

LinkedIn keeps pace with competing job boards (e.g., ZipRecruiter and Indeed) by publishing millions of jobs annually.

Professionals no longer need to keep track of recommendation emails and letters because LinkedIn has convenient endorsement and recommendation features.

The site makes beneficial connections a reality and doesn’t limit you by demographic. You and your clients can market yourselves to others halfway across the world.

The publishing platform (start a post and write an article) enable every one of us to be seen through our words.

LinkedIn offers a vibrant newsfeed highlighting happenings (e.g., updates) from your network.

Chances are, NONE OF US use LinkedIn to its fullest potential.

1. RECAP

Throughout this program, we showcased many areas of LinkedIn.

Module 1 was an INTRODUCTION to the LinkedIn Profile Writing & Mastery Program (LPWMP). We told you that LinkedIn profile writing services are on the rise – and we expect that to continue. Most profile writers start as resume writers, yet there are exclusive LinkedIn profile writers now too.

LinkedIn has TERMS OF USE nuances that we (and our clients, too!) need to be aware of, which we covered in module 2 of this program.

For example, we covered the sticky subjects of accessing others’ profiles and the use of automated bots.

We also reminded you that LinkedIn could not guarantee confidentiality, which is oftentimes a rude awakening for those who want/need a confidential job search.

For profile writers, we find LinkedIn enticing because of the business opportunity and sales potential. And despite the dangers, our clients get drawn in as well by the many job openings, eye-opening insights, and site ease of use.

There are MAJOR DIFFERENCES between resumes and LinkedIn profiles, which we covered in module 3. We often hear LinkedIn being referred to as an online resume, which on the surface, is somewhat true. Yet, you and I both know that LinkedIn goes well beyond what any resume can do.

In that module, we outlined WHY writing and fleshing out LinkedIn profiles differently are so important. Sure, there are some similarities, yet the differences are far more significant.

Module 4 is when we started showering you with downloads and WRITING BEST PRACTICES.

We provided you with writing examples and outlined content strategies to help flesh out LinkedIn headlines, about, and experience sections much faster.

Although not a sexy topic, we shifted to teaching LINKEDIN’S PRIVACY SETTINGS in module 5. We dove deep into privacy settings and boiled down the list to those we feel are most important for you and your clients. You were provided the Quick Guide to LinkedIn’s Settings & Privacy for easy reference.

TOOLS was the topic of module 6, where we outlined software and apps for content development, grammar, marketing, etc. We talked about the “bad boys” of tools, which some in our industry use knowingly violate LinkedIn’s terms of use.

We’d given you access to several downloads until now, but we decided to keep going by making module 7 ALL ABOUT DOWNLOADS. We provided you with done-for-you resources to streamline your profile writing efforts and be a more significant asset for clients, which is the best way to build repeat and referral business.

In module 8, we introduced you to WHY RECOMMENDATIONS (and creating a system for collecting them!) should be a top priority for your growing writing business.

Because clients sometimes struggle with writing, we provided you with template recommendation content to pass along to your clients. The content is great “as is,” or you can build upon and customize it to your liking.

2. YOUR PATH TO LINKEDIN SUCCESS

As profile writers, there are 6 primary ways to use LinkedIn to attract prospects and clients.

You may be able to master just 2-3 of these and get enough results.

When you master all 6, LinkedIn fills just about any revenue gap you’re struggling with.

The 6 areas we’re referring to are:

  1. Establish Profile
  2. Publish Updates
  3. Write Articles
  4. Messaging/Direct Communications
  5. Set up the Company Page
  6. Establish Service Page (In October 2021, LinkedIn announced Service Pages would replace ProFinder)

The first 4 on the list are native to your profile.

The bottom 2, the business and service pages, require setup.

When you master these 6 areas, expect LinkedIn to be a game-changer to your bottom line.

Once everything is set up and optimized, it’s time to discuss what you need to do next.

There are many SOMETHINGS to do next.

  • Get active so you’re not a wallflower on LinkedIn.
  • Use calls to action in your copy.
  • Introduce yourself to people and initiate conversations.
  • Say thank you often to members of your network.
  • Stay on top of your profile. Make updates regularly.
  • Monitor your feed and like/comment/share content with your network that you find interesting, exciting, or important.
  • Be active so you’re in front of prospects when their needs arise.
  • Take consistent actions daily. You’re less likely to burn out if you keep a steady, consistent pace.
  • Use relevant keywords and #hashtags in just about everything you do.
  • Leverage low-cost design software like Canva to develop colorful, eye-appealing graphics for all corners of your LinkedIn presence.
  • Be different, so you stand out.

3. PROFILES WE LIKE

We mentioned earlier in this program that LinkedIn profiles can be written in the third-person or first-person with pronouns. The preferred method amongst professional resume writers is the latter because LinkedIn is a social platform. Therefore, we believe stories and conversational tones help clients be more relatable to profile readers (e.g., recruiters and hiring managers).

The profiles in this list show you different strategies for writing and leveraging LinkedIn profiles. Use this list to help find the style you like.

  • Lance Brunen
  • Peggie Arvidson
  • Gery Deer
  • Kelley Knott
  • Rafael Medina
  • Pauola Iuspa-Abbott
  • Kristy Pierce
  • Gary Vaynerchuk
  • Rudy B
  • Terell Brown
