What led you to resume writing? When did you start?
I officially started writing resumes in 2007. I had been in HR, and since I always wanted to have my own business, I thought that could be a future option. I’d casually mentioned this to a co-worker, and she said “have I got a client for you!”. I was familiar with resumes, as I often screened them. However, that was the very first one I wrote from start to finish (for free).
How has your business grown?
More than I could have imagined! I went from breaking even (after expenses) to making more than my corporate job. My clients have also changed.
Give an overview of your company’s services. Did you morph/expand services as time passed? Why?
I provide services for all aspects of career management, including coaching and writing. I started out writing resumes and cover letters, but soon added additional written materials such as thank you letters, summaries, reference letters, etc.. Since then, I’ve trained to become a Career Coach and have added combined packages. I also changed the focus of my services to target mid-upper level business professionals and executives.
If you could share one learning experience, bit of business wisdom, what would it be?
Speak on career topics whenever you can. It’s a great way to quickly make a name for yourself.
How has your marketing and advertising strategies changed?
When I first started out, I concentrated on paid advertising. While still a part of my plan, I now focus on publicity. It often requires more work, but costs less and brings me more business.
What advice would you give new resume writers and career professionals?
Have confidence! Even people new to the industry know more about careers and resume writing that their clients.
