In our next installment on resume writer certifications, we’ll be looking at an organization that offers more certification options than any other.
CAREER DIRECTORS INTERNATIONAL (CDI) www.careerdirectors.com
Originally founded in 2000 as the Professional Resume Writing and Research Association (PRWRA), the organization changed its name in 2005 to Career Directors International to emphasize the international aspects of its business model.
CDI offers the following certifications/designations:
Certified Advanced Resume Writer (CARW)
Certified Master Resume Writer (CMRW)
Certified Expert Resume Writer (CERW)
Certified Federal Resume Writer (CFRW)
Certified Military Resume Writer (CMRW)
Certified Resume Specialist (CRS+X) *X signifies one of 14 specialty areas available)
CDI offers more resume writer certifications than any other organization and has turned resume writing certifications into a global business. Its training programs are designed to meet the diverse, changing needs of resume writers, career development professionals, and career transition specialists.
All of CDI’s resume programs involve the same basic format: creation of a sample resume and cover letter, followed by an examination based on a study guide. The cost for a certification ranges from $200 to $250 (in addition to a $220 annual membership fee). For any of the advanced certifications (anything other than the CARW), a writer must possess a basic certification either from CDI or a similar credentialing organization.
Beyond the CARW, the test/evaluation process becomes more stringent. For instance, for the CMRW certification, a writer would be required to write an article of 1,000 words or more plus submit seven resumes and two cover letters for evaluation, in areas such as Executive, Career Change, Technical, New Graduate, or other.
Within the resume writing industry, there is ongoing debate about whether or not it is important to have specialized certifications for military resumes or other areas, or to have multiple certifications at all. However, the continued growth of CDI indicates that many writers are choosing to obtain certifications in more than one area.
