COMMENTS FROM A BOOK READER
I received a fantastic email from Tiffany Kent, a former resume writer who’s planning to restart her resume business later this summer. I don’t generally share these emails, but I just love Tiffany’s story. Be sure to stop by Tiffany’s website and say hello.
Here’s what Tiffany wrote:
Hi Teena,
I just wanted to send you a quick “Thank You” e-mail to express how much I appreciate the fabulous information you shared in your ebook, Start Your Resume Writing Business.
I must admit that I put off buying your book for a while due to its price. I thought it might be helpful, but I was not convinced it was worth the investment because I am generally a person who prefers printed books over ebooks. I purchased your ebook a little over two weeks ago and have been so blessed by the wealth of information! There really is no other book on the market that even begins to compare to it. I have other books on my shelf that are supposedly written for resume writers about the resume writing business. Those books are not worth the paper they are printed on! Your book is truly THE resource for anyone interested in this business field!
My first attempt at operating a resume writing business dates back to January of 2005. I had placed some Yellow Page ads that came out that month. The sales representative recommended the resume writing category when I called to list under “writers.” At the time I had zero experience writing resumes, but decided to expand my area of expertise. At the time I was not a believer about the importance of niches; I mistakenly thought they closed doors of opportunity and that it was better to be a “Jack of All Trades” writer. When the calls began to trickle in from my simple line ad in the resume category, I quickly learned that I could make more money writing resumes than writing other projects for business clients. (As it turned out, the Resume Writing category was the ONLY category that got me any customers that year from Yellow Page ads.)
Unfortunately, I was unable to continue my business because I got pregnant and developed complications with my pregnancy. I ended up taking a few years off to take care of my new daughter and to concurrently be the primary caregiver for my disabled stepson. After being away from the business world for six years, I found the new aspects of social networking and other related newer career service options to be quite intimidating. Learning that the number of resume writers in my local area has also doubled since late 2005 was also a depressing realization, making me second-guess my desire to return as a business owner working in this industry.
Your ebook has helped to both inspire me and to educate me about the success-building options that will enhance my resume writing business. I am currently still in the planning stages and will re-launch my business early this summer. Your Business Plan, Marketing Plan, Working With Clients, and Add-Ons chapters are especially helpful. I foolishly did not operate under a business plan previously, nor had I truly analyzed competitors or sought to develop a solid web site that would help my business succeed. I literally fell into this career field by accident, but have already realized just how profitable and fulfilling it can be to work as a resume writer. Your book is helping to fill in the gaps and replace my “Jack of All Trades” mindset with one firmly focused on the career services niche.
Thanks to your e-book, I am now fully preparing myself to design a new business model that should hopefully remain viable for years to come. For example, after comparing myself to my local competitors, I realized that very few writers in my area are certified resume writers. I would never have realized this had I not taken the advice from your ebook to research competitors and ascertain what makes my services and business different.
Although I hold a B.A. degree that I earned summa cum laude and am almost finished with a M.S. degree in Organization Development (which has direct overlays with human resources), finding out that obtaining a certification or two will give me an added layer of authority has definitely motivated me to pursue CPRW, NCRW, and similar certification programs. I hope to have obtained at least one certification by this fall and will publicize this fact via Press Releases to potentially add validity to my skills for local clients.
Overall, no words can truly express my gratitude for your honesty, solid advice, and practical tips that make up the bulk of your ebook. Please accept my flimsy “Thank You,” since it is the only socially customary expression used to express how much your work has helped me.
God bless you!
Sincerely,
Tiffany Kent
